North Hayling Recreation Hall
North Hayling Recreation Hall occupies a site on St Peters Road in North Hayling. Known formally as North Hayling Parish Hall, the building traces its origins to 1925 when local residents initiated its construction. William Hedger led the effort, supported by trustees Tom Brown and Mrs Jane Purse.
The land was purchased from Alfred Harvey Brown for £95 in May of that year. Fundraising involved residents from North and South Hayling collecting contributions door-to-door using horse and cart. The hall opened officially on 16 September 1925, providing a dedicated space for community gatherings.
Community involvement shaped the hall from the outset. A voluntary membership scheme, drawing participants from across the island, helped cover initial building costs. This system gradually phased out as the venue became self-sustaining. Additional funds raised over subsequent decades enabled extensions to the original structure, expanding its capacity and amenities to meet evolving needs.
The main hall spans 16.5 metres by 6.5 metres and includes a raised stage measuring 2.3 metres by 4.7 metres, suitable for performances or presentations.
An open-plan kitchen connects directly via a serving hatch and contains a large cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, and substantial fridge/freezer. Toilet facilities consist of separate male and female provisions alongside an accessible option. The venue supplies 120 chairs and 16 tables, each 6 feet by 2.5 feet, for arrangements during events.
External areas enhance the hall’s appeal. A grassed garden, approximately 20 metres by 8 metres, runs alongside the building and offers outdoor space for activities. A car park accommodates around 20 vehicles, facilitating access for groups arriving by car.
Trustees, assisted by local volunteers from across Hayling Island, oversee operations. The current trustees include Lil King, Graham North, and Sarah Cobbold. As a charitable facility, the hall remains available for hire to support a variety of purposes, including meetings, celebrations, and social functions. All areas – hall, kitchen, toilets, garden, and parking – form part of the standard provision.
This venue has served the parishes of North and South Hayling for nearly a century. Its development through local initiative and ongoing maintenance by residents underscores a tradition of communal responsibility. The hall continues to function as a practical resource for group activities on the island.
