Hayling Island Nature Reserve

Hayling Island Nature Reserve

The Hayling Billy Local Nature Reserve covers 42 hectares along the western edge of Hayling Island, where the old railway trackbed has become a dedicated coastal path. This linear route traces the shoreline of Langstone Harbour, placing users close to tidal mudflats and saltmarsh that support diverse wildlife.

The reserve contributes to the wider Chichester and Langstone Harbours protected area, recognised for its international importance to migrating and wintering birds.

Wading birds such as curlew, redshank and oystercatcher feed on the exposed mud at low tide, while brent geese and various duck species gather in larger numbers during colder months. The harbour’s sheltered waters attract seals on occasion, and the adjacent vegetation provides habitat for smaller birds and insects. Clear sightlines across the water extend towards Portsmouth and the South Downs on finer days.

The path itself follows the route of the Hayling Billy branch line, which carried passengers and freight until its closure in 1963.

Conversion to public use preserved the straight, level alignment of the old railway, creating a surface that remains firm underfoot for much of its length. Recent resurfacing work on the northern section has extended all-weather capability, reducing mud and improving year-round access.

Cyclists, walkers and horse riders share the trail, with enough width for passing in most places. Mobility scooters and wheelchairs can navigate the route comfortably, and several entry points allow shorter sections to be tackled. The northern end begins near the road bridge from the mainland, while the southern terminus meets residential areas close to the island’s beaches.

Side paths lead to the foreshore, offering spots to pause and scan the harbour or simply take in the open views. The combination of historical railway remnants and active natural shoreline creates a distinctive setting that draws regular use from those seeking a straightforward outdoor route.
